Every where I look I see businesses in Westlake, Ohio and surrounding areas either doing two things. It seems they are either booming and really prospering… or they are really hurting.
There is a shift happening right now. Mobile phone technology has come to head as a game changer in the way that people choose who they will give their money to. It used to be that people would use yellow pages to find local businesses. They might also rely on referrals from friends and acquaintances. Slowly the internet has been chipping away at the yellow pages to the point where they simply don’t perform like they used to.
However even in the last few months the number of people using web enabled smart phones are skyrocketing exponentially. Androids, Blackberries and iPhones are being given away. There is so many income streams coming back to cell phone companies that they are discounting their internet plans.
What is more these phones are smart and people depend on them for many facets of their life. People talk to their phones in order to send email, text message and make calls. They scan barcodes of products at the store to see if there is a cheaper way to get the same product or to see if the product has an allergen… etc… The options provided to smart phone owners are only limited by the creativity of the millions of app developers feverishly working away.
It is even gotten to the point where there is something called “augmented reality”. It is an incredible thing where a cell phone owner can open up her camera phone and pan around her surroundings looking at the screen. The gps and internet features on the phone will label everything she sees, instructing her on what she is looking at and guiding her through a kind of virtual reality that is also real at the same time.
This proliferation of unbelievable mobile technology is working synergistically with big social networks like facebook and twitter and the smaller niche mobile centric networks like foursquare to create opportunities for marketing that will help you if you can harness them and hurt you if you can’t. What does this mean to you as a business owner? Never before has all this information been available to consumers at any moment at any place. For local based professionals and brick and mortar businesses it is very very important that they get the shift that is taking place here.
